St John's Centenary Poem
Spire of inspiration, font of village prayers,
Communion of the people, for a hundred faithful years,
Once standing as a landmark, over fields of ripening corn,
Listening to the sounds of clogs in the chill of early morn
Now the centre of our worship, hub of urban grace,
Peace amongst confusion of the communications race,
Then serving as a focus for our comfort and relief,
In times of war and hardship and from tragic personal grief.
Still acting as the flagship of God’s redeeming fame,
The power of the baptismal cross signed in Jesus’ name,
Ringing to the Anthems, celebrating Holy Days,
Innocence of Christmas child, resurrecting Easter praise.
A century of worship, the Sacraments received, secure,
The blessings of the bread and wine that Jesus has made sure Centenary Banner
Spire of inspiration, the architect’s great dream,
Living for a hundred years, St. John’s at Hindley Green.
